The commander of the renowned Desert Rats armoured division during the first Gulf War joined top Rotarians at a charity dinner in Ilkley last week.

Major General Patrick Cordingley entertained Yorkshire Rotarians with his talk at the Craiglands Hotel last Thursday.

He joined other VIP guests, including national Rotary president, Jim Moulson, and the Consul General of Pakistan in Bradford, His Excellency Syed Sail Abbas.

Rotarians also heard the latest update from Leeds University on a development of a new polio vaccine. The event raised £2,500 towards the Thanks for Life – End Polio Now campaign.

Another Rotary charity dinner in Scarborough the previous week, featuring Falklands War veteran Simon Weston, took the combined total raised to £7,500.

Rotary aims to match a £200 donation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in an international effort to eradicate polio.
