There are a number of talented women players in the Wharfedale and Airedale district, some play in the various leagues others simply enjoy social snooker or billiards with family and friends.

The Wharfedale Snooker Association decided a separate competition should be staged and dedicated a brand new Wharfedale Ladies Snooker Champions Cup as the prize.

The competition was staged at Hawkhill on Sunday and eight players competed in the knockout tournament.

Players from Horsforth Cons, Rawdon Cons and Hawkhill took part and were handicapped according to ability.

The semi-finals were close run contests with Karen Walton and daughter Steph each being narrowly beaten by the Horsforth players Rachel Ingham and Laura Hammerton.

The final between Rachel and Laura was a two-frame contest with aggregate total points to count and was refereed by EABSA official referee David Richardson. Laura cued nicely and built a healthy lead but some good play by Rachel kept her in the contest. Eventually, late in the second frame, Laura had done enough to win and the new trophy was presented to her by Association chairman John Waite.
